Privacy and takedown requests

FOI Monitor republishes records that agencies have already published. This page explains how to ask for one to be hidden, and what the site records about its visitors.

Where the records come from

Every release on FOI Monitor was first published by an Australian Government agency on its own FOI disclosure log, as section 11C of the Freedom of Information Act 1982 requires. FOI Monitor copies the listing, downloads the document, extracts its text and adds a summary. It does not make FOI requests and it does not hold anything an agency has not already made public.

Before publishing a document, the releasing agency decides what personal information to remove under the FOI Act and the Privacy Act 1988. FOI Monitor does not edit or redact the documents it indexes. The text you see here is the text the agency published, as read by optical character recognition, so it can also contain recognition errors.

Asking for a release to be hidden

If a release concerns you, email ed.miller@energyfuturesfoundation.org and include:

  1. the link to the release on FOI Monitor,
  2. the release you want hidden (we hide all of it, including its summary and document text), and
  3. why, in a sentence or two. You do not need to give legal reasons.

If your email reaches us, within 2 business days we will hide the item while we review it. We will then write back to say whether it stays hidden. Hiding a release here does not remove it from the agency's own disclosure log. To ask for that, contact the agency directly. Its log is linked from every release page.

When an agency withdraws a release

Agencies sometimes withdraw a release from their log, for example after a complaint or an error in what was published. FOI Monitor checks each log regularly and compares it with what it has indexed. We hide a release here once our checks detect that the agency has withdrawn it. If you know a release has been withdrawn and it is still showing, email the address above and we will hide it.

What the site records about visitors

There are no accounts, no tracking cookies and no advertising or analytics scripts. Every file the pages load comes from this site. If you choose a light or dark theme, that choice is stored in your own browser and never sent to us.

Like any website, the server keeps access logs, which record the address your request came from, the page requested and the time. They are used to keep the site running and to limit automated abuse, not to profile visitors or to share with advertisers.
